A day in the life of an ANZAC solider, 25th April 1915

It was a great experience looking into the history of the wars, especially the day of the 25th April 1915. The films, stories and poems we read motivated to look at what life would have been like for these soldiers. We imagined, brainstormed and shared our ideas and then constructed our own diary about this day as if we were there. Some fantastic entries were created, you have done an amazing job room 6.

In flanders field...

We read the poem 'In Flanders Field', which was written during the First World War by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. This beautiful poem inspired us to look at images of the red poppies this poem describes. After looking through numerous images and reading lots of stories about the poppy we decided we would like to have a go at painting our own red poppies. Here is a selection of completed poppies.

WEEK ONE TERM 2

Term two is here!! It has been fantastic to be back at school this week, everyone is fully recharged and our energy levels are soaring. Room 6 has made a brilliant start to the term. We have produced some amazing work from our research about ANZAC Day, which we celebrated on Wednesday the 25th. It was really amazing to hear all the stories about people's poppas, granddads, great granddads and great-great grandads and their experiences with the different wars.We watched a few clips of WW1 that had been restored by the great Peter Jackson and these helped triggered some writing ideas about what it would have been like to be a soldier landing at ANZAC Cove on the day of the 25th April 1915.

Look out for the stories being placed on our blog very soon :)

Holidays update

I hope you are all having a fantastic break! I have enjoyed some lovely time with my family, my older brother Aidan got married on Saturday so it was fantastic to see everyone! It was a glorious day as well. I have also had lots of fun doing some walks in the Kaimai Ranges and taking Zack to the beach and parks. I have also been thinking a lot about term 2 and the fun things we can do! Plus Sunny the little puss has loved having me home all the time, and she is coping well being dragged around by Zack :)

Also one of our caterpillars has started to turn into a chrysalis, which is very exciting - hopefully it will be just about to hatch when we are all back at school on Monday..

What have you enjoyed so far on your holidays?

Wow its week 10...

Time has flown by! I can not believe how fast this term has gone. It has been an extremely successful and fun term. I have enjoyed every moment of being in Room 6 and can not wait to see what will happen throughout the year.  We have had lots of fun and have learned a lot, we have successfully completed our math unit on fractions, and have already developed our basic facts skills. We have looked at many different reading strategies, and how they help us become better readers. We have looked at making predictions, activating our prior knowledge, summarizing, questioning, and becoming self-monitors. Room 6 has completed some fantastic writing this term, we have produced out-standing bio-poems, amazing recount writing pieces and some brilliant and spectacular report writing pieces (which will be published online over the next few days). We loved our adventure to the wetlands and learning so many different things about the ecosystem.
We also had some amazing highlights, the first was finding Room 6's baby - Sunny the Little Puss who joined us from week one, visiting a few days a week ever since. Golly she has grown fast, but still loves all of the attention. We had the Hydro-planes visit the school which was a great experience to see what they look like up close and in side. Just last week we also had a hot air balloon visit the school and wow that was amazing, seeing that balloon being inflated that close on a beautiful Friday morning was fabulous!
I am very excited to see what term 2 brings... I know we already have some awesome fun and learning planned for everyone :)
